“Sweet Tweets”

My friend Liz made this quilt for a new member of the extended family.  As soon as I saw it I knew it had to be a pattern.  I helped with proofing and I’m making one now a friends new baby.

IMG_4894 Only something went wrong.  It is so like me to do something like this.  Can you see it?

IMG_4903 I put the Steam-A-Seam on the WRONG SIDE of the fabric.  I didn’t even notice until I pulled off the paper backing to iron it down and realized the sticky side was on the right side of the fabric.

IMG_4899 So now I’m not sure what to do.  It took a little time to trace those birds, cut them out and iron them on.  I really don’t want to do it again and waste all of this fabric.  Plus, I’m out of Steam-A-Seam.  I read this article in a Quilts And More  issue about using the wrong side of the fabric to give a vintage, faded look to your quilts.  So I'm going to go with it and hope for the best.   You can buy your own pattern in her Etsy shop and enter her giveaway on her blog for a chance to win the pattern for free!

  2. Eeek! I know you are bummed. But I bet muted birdies could look kind of cool. And I know the recipients would be pleased with any of your handmade creations. It's the thought and touch that matters. Oh, yeah, and that love factor sure doesn't hurt! I think you're good!

  3. Oh it's beautiful Christina, and deserves to be a pattern! It's hard when we are into brighter fabrics to actually like a softer look sometimes, but I think your 'wrong side' birds look lovely, and will make a beautiful, vintage look quilt. xo

  4. Yep I agree with the above comments. If you don't mention to people that it is the 'wrong' side of the fabric, then no-one will be the wiser!!

I think it looks absolutely beautiful and considering it is for a babe, the soft, muted colours are perfect!!

  6. I've seen the "wrong" side of the fabric used several times to great effect! (But I've always been too chicken to try it). But necessity is the mother of invention. You've got nothing to lose, and I always say that sometimes are biggest quilting mistakes lead to creativity that makes for a more interesting quilt. It does have a soft vintage look -- very popular right now :).

  7. I actually think that the muted side of fabric could be really great for a baby quilt. Maybe your mistake will turn into a wonderful trend or you may just fall in love with it and use the "mistake" again!

Actually I think I may try that in the future....

  8. I love it! It looks so soft and sweet in those colours and I didn't even realise that it was the reverse of the fabric! The pattern is so sweet I think you could get away with a lot of things on this one. :)

  10. Make it do and pretend that's how it's supposed to be. Some of my favorite things I've made came from trying to fix a mistake. Maybe you'll love it in the end.

  14. I often use the wrong side of the fabric. I learned to do this with my watercolor quilts. I like the soft, muted look.

    The birds are very sweet!

  16. Argh! I hate when I make boo-boos like that, but everyone does it. Just go ahead with the quilt like you meant to do it that way hehe

  17. Oh the joys of crafting! I bet it will be awesome once it's quilted. How fun....you could even tea dye it to really age it.

  19. Hi. I just discovered your blog because my Google Reader suggested it to me in that little box at the side! (And I love it). The bird quilt is amazing - how clever. Never mind the Steam a Seam mix-up!

  20. At first I thought, there is nothing wrong with the cutting but I said, why did she choose such muted colors for fabric. Now I know why...

  21. ugh - I have done that SO many times! I feel your pain. I would stick them on backwards, raw edge applique (purposely leaving an extra bit of raw edge to fray) and call it a day. Love the quilts!

  22. I feel for you - been there and done that too. Still seems to look pretty good though, so don't worry.
