You know I've missed my machine when I cranked multiple projects out over the weekend. First up :: pot holders. These are two of a planned set of four. I did the embroidery while in the car on the way home – drawing on the fabric and all. The designs were from the A Rainbow of Stitches book my husband “got” me for Christmas (read :: I bought and wrapped and put his name on the package to me from him). I totally L-O-V-E this book. I was going to work on crocheting in the car, but since I forgot it at my dads… I’m glad I thought to bring my embroidery along.
While I was on the computer very, very little while out of town, I did happen to get on Flickr and see Erin’s potholders she finished up. I knew I wanted to create some little patchwork potholder’s myself, but didn’t know the embroidery would be at the center until I decided I wanted to stitch these designs on the way home.
Maybe I'll get the other two done this week and be able to share them with you. I’m still debating on whether I'll be keeping them or selling them…
But, before I could actually work on these, I had to get my scraps under control. My small scraps, up until this point, were kept in a set of three small fabric scrap baskets, but they were overflowing those and getting out of control so it was time to make myself a big storage container.
Enter the HUMOUNGOUS fabric scrap basket. I created a base on the computer, printed it off and then went to town sewing it up. I know someone is going to ask me for the dimensions, so I went and measured :: diameter 9 3/4” x 11 1/2” tall + another 3” for the folded over part. I have room to grow that way. Since I didn’t have a pattern, I wasn’t realizing how tall it would actually be in comparison to the base, but it worked out great. I love having the folded over part for a contrast in fabrics. So this is all made with IKEA fabrics and then some mid-weight interfacing ironed on to the exterior fabric. I also used the cream fabric on the pot holders since I had some scraps of it. The red and white fabric is only in stock as you find it now, so if you want some, I would hurry to IKEA now before it’s gone. I need to go get another yard myself. They are a nice decorator weight and I can’t say enough about the cream fabric. I think I need a bolt of it.

Your blog is one of my favorites. You have an eye for matching fabrics together - the potholders are wonderful. I have a lot of insulated batting laying around, something to think about :) Thanks for sharing & for the inspiration!

Cute cute cute!!! I need a scrap suitcase... it's getting out of control.
Those potholders are gorgeous! I really like this kind of patchwork. Love the embroideries and the bright colored fabrics! Very cute fabric basket as well.
I needed a birthday gift idea for my friend, and wanted to do something fun in the kitchen (she's remodeling hers) and now i have a grand idea! thank you for your inspiration!
Great potholders! I love the embroidery, and it seems like that kind of embroidery is really coming back! I used to do that all the time when I was a girl; then everyone started doing cross stitch. Nice fabric scrap container. I filled a basket, then filled another basket, then started another. And I use a Bolt Fabric bag for saving selvages. I need a better system :)

Those potholders are great! So fresh and fun to look at in the kitchen - AND useful!
Oooo. Good projects! I LOVE the Rainbow Stitching book too. I have been happily stitching without an end project in mind. I really like the patchwork potholders. Betcha that type of patchwork would be sweet made into a pillow with some of the larger patterns from your new book!
this fabric bucket is so pretty and so much better than the small plastic bucket i have all mine in. maybe it is time to nicey up my fabric storage
I love the potholders and the embroidery adds such a nice touch! I so want to make that fabric bucket, it looks so cool.

Those potholders are precious! Anyone that can make a pile of scraps look good is a hero in my book!
Smiles,
Emily
I was just looking at my old potholders that were given to me by my mother in law--not something she loved, just something she didn't need and I did. I want cuter ones and now I know what to do!
I have a basket I keep under my desk, piling scraps into it ... one of these days I'm going to see what I can do with all of them.
