New Quilt + Pattern Writing

3/22/2010

IMG_3467Technically the “writing” part is finished and now it’s on to the testing phase.  I’ve drawn all my diagrams, made my charts and written my pattern.  It’s even been sent off for some proof reading and testing.

IMG_3486But it will still be a week or so before it’s ready for release.  I am also working my way through the pattern with the Nicey Jane fabrics.  This pattern will be different from most patterns you are use to.  I have tables with checklists to help with cutting, and diagrams and tables to help with fabric placement as well as a layout showing where everything is to go.  It is the kind of pattern that my mom would always love to have when making quilts (in fact, a lot of times I end up making such things for existing patterns just to make sense of them).   I’m excited to release it and get more feedback.

IMG_3490This arrived in the mail today.  I ordered it from Fabric.com last week.  My friends little girl turns 2 next month (she’s just 4 weeks older than my Brice).  She is the type of person that you wouldn’t expect to like handmade items, but she really does seem to like when I make things for her.  I made her and her husband a quilt for their wedding (gifted on their 1st anniversary – I know I'm not alone in that one!) - and a nursing cover-up for her baby shower (and something else, but I can’t remember what).  I showed her another, more simple dress pattern and asked if her daughter would wear such things, she said yes, so I have a green light to make clothes.  I’m hoping to have this done in time that she could wear it for her birthday if she so chooses.  My mom helped me pick out the fabric for the dress, it’s from the Meadowsweet line by Sandi Henderson.  I think it will be a perfect print for this dress and I'm excited to see it made!  Has anyone made this dress before?  Is it true to size?  It says a 2T is a lot bigger than our 2T kids really are, so I'm wondering if I should make one of the smaller sizes.  Let me know your experience with this pattern.

The pattern is Birthday Party Dress by Oliver+S and the fabric is Paper Snowflake in Banana by Sandi Henderson for Michael Miller Fabrics.

wow, the pattern looks cool! You've been doing a lot! Sorry I haven't tried any of the oliver + s clothes, it'll be really cute though. :)

That is going to be one cute dress! Sorry I haven't tried any oliver + s patterns either, but I'm very keen to try. There is quite a good forum on their website for getting extra info on the patterns, so maybe head over there? Can't wait to see the finished product!

I made that dress too for my daughter's second birthday.

I made it in 12-18 months size for her to wear. But my daughter IS on the petite side so just to be safe, you could ask for her chest size and go from there. Liesl also has some tips on Oliver+S blog on how to alter the pattern pieces if the child is slimmer.

Hope this helps!

Hmmm.... I've done an Oliver + S skirt before, I tend to try and do a size up for Mason, simply because I want her to be able to wear it longer....

i steer clear of clothing patterns...i always get so turned around it is too frustrating to finish. your pattern, i am sure, is going to be amazing. looks like a lot of detail

Ooo, Nicey Jane. So pretty. I can’t wait to see what quilt you are making with it.

The fabric you have for the dress is very nice, it’ll be adorable. I love friends that love my handmade items, I tend to make a lot of things for them if they do too. :)

What a fun pattern/fabric! I wish I had experience with the Oliver and S patterns, too! Must purchase this pattern, too! So cute for summer! I see something fun peeking out from under the Sandi Henderson print! SOME GINGHAM! I have had that in my shopping cart for a few days and I think I'm going to jump for it! I'm so into black and white gingham these days! Any gingham for that matter. What are you going to do with yours?
Have fun,
Laurie

See I knew other people would make checklists and things. I am anal that way and my husband laughs at me.

But with fabric that comes out (like the nicey jane) I don't want to make a cut that I will be wasted.

They little dress is a cuties. love Oliver and S patterns.

I have made a few of these dresses from this pattern. I don't think this particular dress runs too big, and one of my little girls in particular runs on the small size. Here is one of them I made: http://www.flickr.com/photos/megvs/3532473138/in/set-72157617107163367/ I will say this pattern took some time though. It is a well written pattern and turns out great, but sometimes it left me scratching my head as I was making it.

I made this dress for my granddaughters birthday dress last year, I think its true to size, although she is on the small side. This dress has to be ironed after each wash, but well worth it!
