Stacked {Whatever} Block

4/17/2010

IMG_4539 I know, real inventive name.  But I had no idea what to call it.  And I can’t seem to find a name based on my searches.  I can’t imagine this block doesn’t have a name yet, seems how I've seen it around for years now.  I do like Stacked Bolts/Bricks/Books.  I will let you decide what it’s a stack of.

IMG_4539 Of course, if you turn the block clockwise it is no longer stacked bolts/bricks/books.  It looks more like a seismograph of an earthquake.  That could just be the geologist in me.  But that’s beside the point.  This is the next block in the Quilt-Along.  This would be “December’s” block.  Originally the inspiration for this was a photo called “Sound Waves” by Film in the Fridge.  But the photo is no longer available to view on her photostream, so you will just have to check it out in the mosaic that was built for this project.  I decided to go with more of a random stack.  Liz reminded me last night of an Anna Maria Horner fabric that looks like this called “Volumes”.  I’m assuming she means volumes of books.

Anyways, it’s not a particularly difficult block, but sometimes it’s nice to have someone else work it out for you.  I’ve done just that.  It is more of an improvised kind of block, but I've also given you some measurements if you prefer.  I know sometimes I just want to reproduce the exact thing and measurements are nice.  Even when improvising.  Again, I've made it a PDF for you to download.  I can’t wait to see what you make!

This looks like one I might be able to do besides my same old big squares. Most patterns scare me, but this I really really like! I may get into this quilting yet! Oh, and the upright stacks remind me of Jenga. I think thats the name of the stack em take it apart game?! Anyways, thanks for this, LOVE the colors and simplicity. Very eye~catching!

So cute! And the geographer in me see the seismograph too!

I interpret the "whatever" as being very conducive to improvising and not uptight about perfection.

"Nuts, I cut that strip a half-inch too short." "Whatever. It's fine."

Stop it!
Now I want to make this too.
If it wasn't for the three, yes three projects I am trying to work on all at the same time, while wrangling two kids and planting a garden, I would be all over this.

Love the asymmetrical aspect of it. I am envisioning this with black as the background/sides. Thank you again for another download . . . you are quite the enabler. :)

O love this type of quilt-where the colors are surrounded by lots of white. It really makes the colors pop.
I haven't yet done one but this seems like one I'd love to start with :)

i really like this block, it adds a TON of color without using a lot of fabrics and prints. it pops more with the white around it. :)

I have great aspirations of putting my HV to good use and making a quilt based on your blocks. In this lifetime.

Thank you so much for posting this! My cousin is dying for a quilt like this, so I think I'll make a mini quilt for myself to get the hang of it before I make hers ;). Thanks again!
