Just Another Sunday

5/09/2010

IMG_5254 Well, that’s kind of what it felt like.  Not because my husband didn’t gift me an awesome gift this year, but because I got it last week and today just pretty much felt like another Sunday.  Although, It was beautiful outside!  I even got a burn on one of my arms (yes, just one).  Of course, being Mother’s Day, I got to tell him to change diapers, except the majority of the time I forgot about that and just did it out of habit.  But I did get out of one smelly one!  Anyways, I’ve been having lots of fun this last week.  My husband has been loading it up with free games and the such, and I go straight for the “Productivity” section.  I’m such a Capricorn.

IMG_5233 My mom gave me this awesome, vintage camera to add to my collection.  I’ve never heard of this one before and will need to do a little research, but it’s so petite and I love how it looks open.  My grandma got me a handy gadget for the kitchen (an egg separator).  My husband was stoked about it.  I guess I know what we can get him for Father’s Day!  Well, I kind of already knew he was a little obsessed with the Slap-Chop.  My mom and I always laugh about it when we’re out and about and see one, but I seriously think one of us needs to buy it for him for a gift.

Okay.  Now it’s time for what you’ve all been waiting for, the winner’s of the two fabulous books I reviewed.  I don’t do giveaways often because I always feel so bad that I can’t give all of you something.  It’s hard choosing just one.  But here we go, by random selection:

Me and my Sewing Machine: Melissa of We Shall Sew

The Gentle Art of Quiltmaking:  La MaƱosa of Getting Your Goat

Congratulations Ladies!  And thanks to everyone that stopped by and left a comment.  I am always humbled by the number of you that stop by to say hi.  I don’t always get to comment, but I pretty much always stop by your blogs to see what you guys are up to.

The Gentle Art of Quiltmaking :: A Book Review

GentleArtofQuiltmaking
The Gentle Art of Quiltmaking: 15 Projects Inspired by Everyday Beauty
Written by Jane Brocket (C&T Publishing)

I was very excited to see this title on the new release list last month. I love Jane Brocket’s book The Gentle Art of Domesticity. One of the things I loved best about that book was it’s photography, and this book does not disappoint on that front. It’s one of those books that you just want to open and look at for hours, just because it’s beautiful. But not only that, it’s inspiring.

IMG_5187
When I first sit down to read a book I always start with the introduction. This is where you get an introduction as to why the book was written, and you get to really know the author’s voice. I have to say, as I read the introduction for this book, I knew that it was not only a book for me, but for many of you, too. In her intro she says this about quilting

This is a book about quilt inspiration: where to find it and how to use it. It is for anyone who has ever wanted to make stunning, imaginative quilts with the minimum of fuss, no matter how basic your sewing skills or how limited you are by time and space.”

IMG_5191
I think that pretty much encompasses us all, in one form or another. I am sure there are many times you look at a quilt and think “Oh, that’s so beautiful. But it looks too hard…” or “…I couldn’t choose fabric like that.” But you can, and I think that’s what this book is really about. Knowing that you can create beautiful quilts by looking around you for inspiration and using the knowledge you have.

IMG_5192
Jane herself talks about how intimidated she was about making quilts, and one day her friend said to her “Oh, for goodness’ sake, Jane, all you have to do is cut up some fabric and sew it together.” How true is that!

Brocket says it best:

I hope to reassure tentative quilters (always remembering that I once was one) that quilting is easy and incredibly enjoyable, that anyone can do it in an ordinary home environment and without a dedicated room or table or design board, and that you don’t need hundreds of expensive fabrics.”

I wish I could share the whole of the introduction of this book with you, because if I could, I know you would all be out buying a copy for yourself this very minute.

IMG_5198
This book is different from many out there, in that it doesn’t take up half the book explaining the basic techniques that most of us know, instead the book is filled with information about choosing fabrics and quantities needed, how to best cut your fabric for backings and borders, information on batting and quilting. But it is done in such a different way, so as not to intimidate, but instead help you to see what an easy craft quilting can really be.

IMG_5206
There are 15 beautiful quilt projects, and everyone of them has wonderfully written forwards to each quilt with information on her design and fabric selections. The Instructions are full of inspirational photos that showcase the quilt in use, as well as giving detailed views. Diagrams and directions are straight to the point and easy to follow without being overwhelming. There are notes and variations on themes. At the end of the book you have a “Quilt Gallery” section showing the whole of the quilt (love this!) as well as a nicely done list of her favorite inspirational books, both quilting and non-quilting. And of course so much more.

IMG_5208
I can not in words express how much you need this book, whether you are new to quilting or a pro. If I were to write a book, this is exactly how I would want mine to be. This is a book for your shelves. You will be inspired again and again, not just by the quilts and photography, but by the inspirational words and helpful hints.

And of course the best part is, thanks once again to C&T Publishing, one of you will get this very copy to come home to your shelf! Unfortunately, I am not able to open this up to anyone living outside the US due to distribution rights. So, US residents only on this one, please. Same as last time, nothing fancy, just leave a comment! I’ll choose a winner at random on Sunday.

Book Review: Me And My Sewing Machine

5/05/2010

Layout 1
Me and My Sewing Machine – A Beginner’s Guide by Kate Haxell
Stash Books (an imprint of C&T Publishing)

I get quite a few emails asking me for good books for the beginner sewist. I never really have a great answer, since this is a topic that I did not learn from a book myself. Because of this, I’m always on the look out for a good book to recommend, and I think I found it in this book. I’ve had my mom (a seamstress for Janzen in a former life) and friends that are new and old to sewing take a flip through the book as well, and we all agree that it is well done and a great place to start.

IMG_5026
Kate starts with the basics, talking about a general sewing machine’s functions and design, tension and accessories, as well as equipment you’ll want to have on hand and why. Next she walks you through the basics of pinning, basting, pressing and everything else to get you set to sew.

IMG_5027
Further chapters deal with seams, hemming, zippers and buttons, ruffles and pleats, and just a plethora of basic information needed for any sewing project. While the book does touch on patchwork and craft sewing techniques, I would say that there is a strong focus on the traditional forms of sewing needed for sewing clothing – but don’t be put off by that! It’s a great place to start even if you just want to do craft sewing (bags, pillows, etc…) because we all like to embellish with pleats and zippers.

IMG_5034
The last chapter of the book includes some simple projects to get you started, among them a skirt, apron, pillows and bag. There are seven projects total, all basic and easy to follow and a great place to start for making it your own with all of the techniques covered in this book.

IMG_5032
Even as someone that has sewn for 20+ years, I still find that I have to go back and reference how to do certain techniques, and this book is a great reference. I would definitely have this book on my shelf. The instructions are clear and concise and every one of them is backed up with multiple photos to help you understand what to do. I can’t recommend this book enough.

And now for the fun part – thanks to the generosity of C&T Publishing, this book could be yours! I’ll be giving away a copy of this to one lucky commenter. Nothing fancy needed, just leave a comment. If you happen to have a favorite, basic sewing book, let us know about it! I’ll be choosing one lucky winner on Sunday.

Sharing

5/04/2010

IMG_4989
I have some things I’ve been meaning to share with you lately, and thought I'd just create a post of it’s own.  I don’t often share links, not because I don’t have a ton of them to share, but just because my posts are usually rushed and I remember I wanted to talk about something after I hit publish.  So, today’s post is devoted to sharing links.

Quilting Bee Blocks

Quilting Bee Blocks – So this was a new to me site that I found out about just today.  But ohmygosh is it ever great!   Erin is the creative force behind this site that collects all sorts of tutorials on quilt blocks and keeps track of all the quilting bee’s out there.  Originally this started out as a Flickr group that expanded into a website.  The idea behind both was to give a one stop inspiration point for all of those quilt bee’s out there.  I can only imagine how hard it is to not only choose a block for your turn, but to also find tutorials for it that everyone else will be able to follow.

Scrap Coloring – A fun website with all sorts of original drawings to color online.  I found this especially great since my little guy loves to color.  You can color with patterns and gradients and, well, you just have to go click around for yourself.  There is a lot to see.

paisleepressheader-0410-2.5
Paisley Press – A great website of an awesome electronic scrapbooking designer.  I love her motto of “embrace your inner minimalist” because that describes me perfectly.  I love minimal-style scrapbooking pages.  She has a shop at Oscraps.  This is one of my favorite spots to buy electronic scrapbooking stuff…that I somehow haven’t gotten to use yet.  But I sure do like to buy it for the day that I will actually scrapbook everything!

mscraps

MScraps – My other favorite spot to buy e-scrapbooking stuff…that sits on the hard drive unused.  Which brings me to:

logosml
25 Days of Templates class – An online class for creating great e-scrap pages.  I think I need to sign up for this one.  It’s $40 registration fee through midnight tonight, then it goes up to $50.  Classes start June 1st and run through the 25th.  I guess I have to decide in the next few hours…  Her website is about digital training for scrapbookers and artists and I bet there is something there for you, even if you don’t scrapbook.

sparklepower copy
Motherhood Week – Candace is hosting a Motherhood week at her blog Sparkle Power.  Each day she is sharing posts from mothers about the joys of motherhood.  I will actually have a guest post up tomorrow, sharing my side of things.  The posts so far are great.  Everyone was able to write about what they wanted and every post is different and unique and fun to read.  She is also having a giveaway with each post.  And besides all of that, her blog is just fun to read!

In Celebration of Mother’s – Amy of A Common Place Life (one of my favorite reads from forever ago!) is having a month of celebration for mother’s.  I have found it so interesting and have really loved it.  I have always loved Amy’s frank view of life and I especially love her take on Mother’s Day, and how we need to show appreciation for our mother’s all the time, not just one day out of the year.

IMG_4970
There is so much more to share, but I need to be better about keeping a list so I can remember them all.  I come across so many great blogs, maybe of them through the comments here on this blog and I really want to be better about sharing what I find.  So that is a new goal for me, to start sharing some of those great blogs I come across.  Next post I'm going to be doing a book review and giving all of you a chance to win it, so see you soon!

I promise you, he did not learn this from watching me.  As much as I want to roll around in my fabric sometimes, I restrain myself.  But apparently Brice couldn’t.  He’s such a turkey!  Usually when he’s quiet in the sewing room he’s just taking my safety pins out of the cup in the drawer, not today.  Today it was all about emptying the very big '”small scraps” bucket.

IMG_4956

In hind sight, it was probably a good thing.  I didn’t realize how crammed down those scraps were.  Time to get busy using them!
