Color Wheel

I decided to quickly sort my fat quarters by color this morning.  It really did go quickly, too!  It’s nice knowing what colors I need and don’t need.  Right now I can look for browns and pinks (two colors that I was sure I had too much of).  Apparently blue is my favorite color.  I have about twice as much of blue than any other color.  I was even pleasantly surprised that I had a nice little stack of greys and purples.  There were a few times I was worried about if I put a fabric in the right color pile, but I think it looks pretty good now that it’s all done.  I tried not to stress about it too much and now it looks great!  It will be so easy to find the colors I need for projects.  Now to work on the yardage…

Great idea! I love seeing your stacks on the worktable like that. I'm curious now what my color "story" is.

Wow, so neat! Do you have a specific way of folding your fabrics? Mine are folded a hundred different ways but I want them to look pretty like yours!

I love to keep my fabric organized by color ... of course they are held in gallon sized ziplock bags that I pile on top of some drawers so it isn't perfect organization, but it works well for me

Wow, I must have been on the same wavelength as you today! I did the same thing. I also have more blues than anything. i think it might be because there are SO many shades of blue.

Apparently, my favorite color is green because I have a crazy amount of it. You have such an amazing fabric stash!

Having your fabric folded neatly makes a huge difference - at least I've found it has for me. It makes it easier to find what I need and I always feel more inspired to quilt with it so neatly folded. I talked about (and showed pictures) of how I fold my fabric in this post: http://sometimescrafter.blogspot.com/2010/03/organizing-thoughts-needed.html

I just finished reading your old post. I love organizing my fabric. But I'm finding that it is taking too much time from sewing. Oh well. I go back and forth on whether to organize mostly by color, breaking up lines of fabric,or keep certain lines together. Which is mostly what I do. At least for a while. I get hung up on prints. Predominant color? Theme? Oh, well, it's all good therapy, right?

Ooo, I'm having stash envy!!
How much fun was that? Putting all the pretties out there together! Bet you couldn't stop smiling!

what a great idea! I don't have much of a stash but maybe this would be a good way of knowing what I need when a little cash comes my way and I feel like splurging :)

I love sorting my fabric this way, and what it tells me that I didn't realize. I would have told you I'm not particularly into pink, but organizing pointed out that I have an abundance of magenta/berry color. Who knew?

Wow, you have a lot of fabric. When you get used to your Bamboo tablet will you post a review about it?

It looks like a quilt shoppe in there! Good for you getting organized!

great shot! I really have been thinking about sorting my stuff by color, but I have some weird sense to some of it - just not all. :)

Oh wow.... I could only wish to have my stash this organized. At the moment I'm happy if it's not taking over the appartment.

I'm always amazed, whenever I sort my fabrics, which colours I have lots of, and which are lacking. I have virtually NO green (so hard to find nice greens in quilting weight, all are either aqua or sludge), and acres and acres of blue and aqua.

such a great idea to put them by colour, you can just grab and create :)

Awesome! You'll love how easy it makes picking fabrics! I sorted my fabrics by color (mostly) a few years ago. It makes pulling colors for scrappy quilts so much easier and actually fun!

Well done! Everything is folded so neatly. It almost makes me want to tidy up my stash....

So wish I had that stash of fabric in my craft room! Loving the new header, been thinking about one for my blog although its been a little abandoned at the moment!! Blog reading is so much more fun!!

Good luck organizing your stash! I feel inspired, and look forward to the day when I can have my own quilting studio again. I married a man with four kids, and both my husband and I work out of the home, so no room for a permanent sewing spot! :-( My stash makes occasional appearances on the dining room table, then off they go to hide again.

Very pretty! I could have sworn that I had brown fabrics too, but discovered that I really did not. When I was making my quilt for Fat Quarterly I only needed 3 2.5" squares for the hexies for the tree bases and boy did I have a heck of a time finding that little bit of fabric! It all ended up coming out of a bag of scraps a friend had sent me.

I am very surprised you didn't have more pink. After I sorted mine I realized I had an obundance of blue too, which was surprising.

I organized mine the same way. And with the yardage as well.
One exception are collections I bought together with the intent of a project in mind, say, like a charm bundle, or some Fassett yardage that just have to go together or my special Japanese fabric. It is neat to see them on the shelf once they're organized. Kind of like artwork.
