The Next Step

2/15/2011

_MG_0902I’ve been wanting to be a little more personal in this space for sometime now, but it has just never translated over.  For so long now life has been about keeping things inside, and for the most part I still will because that’s just the kind of person I am, but I do like the idea of showing you more of who I am and the person that ticks behind the creating.  I love getting to know a quilter, sewer, artist of any kind, on a more personal level.  I think getting to see more of who a person is beyond their craft allows you to have a better appreciation of what they create.  You feel more connected to that person and the effort they put into what they create.

_MG_0432My whole blogging career has been about making my blog what I enjoy in other blogs, because that is what motivates me to continue to create and push myself to new limits.  As time goes on I find new things that interest me and motivate me and this is one of those “things” that has been on my mind for awhile.  I really enjoy getting to know someone, even if it’s just virtually in a blog.  I am a very personable kind of person and I like feeling connected to others.  I think that’s true of most people.  We like to know we’re not alone in the world.

_MG_0891I have insecurities like everyone else, I am only human after all, but beyond those I am a very strong person and I am very proud of that, because it’s not something you come by naturally.  It’s something that you build within yourself.  I hide what bothers me and try and move beyond it and put a smile on my face.  I am not religious, but I am a big believer in Karma.  I live by the golden rules, such as ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’.  As much as I’d like to take shortcuts sometimes, I am honest to a fault and see it through each step of the way.  These are just little bits of who I am, but I hope to share more of myself this coming year as I post about everything I am creating, because this craft journal has become more than just a space to keep track and motivate, but a place to foster creativity in others and find new friends along the way.

Great post! I am glad that we had the chance to talk the other day. I have known you for half of my life and still admire your calmness and ability to just be you at the most opportune time.

Keep on keeping on :)

PS got your little prezzie in the mail today, thank you SEW much!!!

Nice post and I whole-heartedly agree about letting the personal shine through. Though, as another very honest person I'd have to say that generally there is no fault associated with it!

Love your post! You put into words how I feel about my blog and I am looking forward to seeing how your blog becomes more personal.

Appreciate your openness. I get entirely where you are coming from. I think I open up sometimes but it must be the tiniest chink when I look on it again. It is hard to do, thank you for starting the process

I know exactly what you mean. I go back and forth between blogging pretty much exclusively about hand making, and really putting an awful lot of my self and family in the blog. I hope that, over time, it balances out into a nice mix for anyone who stops by!

Hi Christina, a lovely post! I try to have a bit of everything in my blog, ultimately its about my sewing journey but when things go awry its usually because family/work life takes over and so I blog a little of that too. I'm a transparent kinda girl so people can read my emotions easily!! I'm also strong willed (Taurean!) and very stubborn when it comes to things I believe in!!

Christina, I look very much forward to hearing (reading) more about you.

The blogs I love most are the ones where they person shows through.

Lovely post-- it's nice to get to know you on a more personal level and I look forward to future posts! You write very nicely. Did you give yourself some "permission" yesterday?? I hope so! Have a good day!

I'm so glad to hear that we will be getting to know you. I have to say that I am more likely to read the blogs of people that I haven gotten personal glimpses of than blogs that are just inspiration. I can get tutorials etc from anywhere but I want to connect with the person in order to keep coming back.

I love how you are going beyond what's really comfortable to share with us. I,too, like to know something about the person in the blogs I read. I am a crafter too and I'm always interested in how others got started and how they stay motivated. Thank you for sharing bits and pieces of yourself & your life.

Thank you for the post! I know exactly what you mean.I love to share my projects and adventures, but not about the "me" and who I am. In fact the older I am, the more private I am. It does feel like you are the only one going through a "life" thing by yourself sometimes. It is nice to find our someone else knows what it is like too.

This is a great post. For me, too, it's hard to balance my desire for privacy and my desire for connection in the blogging world.

I'm also a student, doing a degree by distance education, and I find that I miss knowing anything personal about my professors - their age, what they look like, their interests, etc.

I think that when I know a little bit about what makes a person tick I can appreciate her art, her writing a little bit more.

I have always felt an easy connection with you (must be that geology thing) and I've found the most remarkable friendships in blogland with other open & caring people. There is a great generosity of spirit here. I'm much more likely to follow bloggers who share their creativity along with some of themselves.

I wish I could attend the sewing summit in fall to meet everyone in person - I feel like I owe (and am owed) hundreds of hugs and I want to cash in!

I, for one, am very glad you decided to tell us more about yourself. I love to get to know the person behind the crafts so much more than the crafts in and of themselves. Beautiful pictures as always.

I just found your blog--through who, I don't remember!--and I love it already! I'm excited to get to "know" you through this particular forum.

Exciting. I'm here for you. And frankly, I'm looking forward to it. I have a feeling we might have some things in common...

Go for it, Christina. You may need to hear that we "want to hear it". Which is true! At least, that's what I'd want to hear. Sometimes I wonder how much "non craft" stuff my readers will appreciate, you know? But it's true that we must write from the heart wherever we find ourselves.
